History at the Foot of the Peak
Long before it was a resort, Picacho Peak was a guidepost — its dramatic spire used as a navigational landmark by explorers as far back as the 1600s.
It's also a piece of Civil War history. The most significant Civil War battle in Arizona — the Battle of Picacho Pass — was fought near the peak on April 15, 1862. Every March, costumed reenactors bring it back to life with mock battles, period military camps, and living-history demonstrations just up the road.
