History at the Foot of the Peak
Long before it was a resort, Picacho Peak was a guidepost, its dramatic spire used as a navigational landmark by explorers as far back as the 1600s.
It's also a piece of Civil War history. The most significant Civil War battle in Arizona, the Battle of Picacho Pass, was fought near the peak on April 15, 1862. Every March, costumed reenactors bring it back to life with mock battles, period military camps, and living-history demonstrations just up the road.
